About MFP

By Joseph Douwe Rienstra, MD

I practice general medicine, which allows me to see the full spectrum of patients. I graduated from Duke Medical School in 1969 and has taught in the Preventive Medicine Department at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.  My study of medicine, including alternative/ traditional medicine has taken me from the Mayo Clinic to India and many places in between. An active student of both pharmaceutical and natural methods, I know the value and limitations of each and how to combine them to treat the individual needs of each patient. I enjoy being a doctor, singing, backcountry hiking, and his family.  I go by “Douwe,” a Dutch name that I inherited from my grandfather.

Although he is one of very few primary doctors not employed by his local hospital, he is married to the chairman of the Hospital Commission, Jill Buhler Rienstra.
